City of Women Delhi
City of Women Delhi is a women’s rights campaign centred around women’s mobility. The initiative is inspired by Rebecca Solnit's City of Women Project, an international initiative with footprints in New York, London and Belgium.
City of Women Delhi is a physical and digital campaign to celebrate, encourage and extend women’s freedom to go anywhere, anytime.
Delhi Metro has been the pioneer in extending safe mobility to the women of Delhi. The expansive public transport system has inherently changed a young woman’s potential to traverse the urban metropolis, and therefore her ability to work, study or have leisure time outside the home. Thus, the project intrinsically ties itself to the Delhi Metro and aims to celebrate its role in empowering the women of Delhi.
The City of Women - Delhi' campaign intends to change the narrative around women's freedom and build a tribe of fearless and independent women who claim the city and inspire others to do so.
The campaign activities include:
Digital Campaign
The digital leg of the campaign will initiate conversations around safe mobility for women and DMRC's positive role in enhancing that. It entails programs and social media movements such as:-
#WomenOfDelhiMetro: A social media campaign highlighting the inspiring stories of
everyday women commuters of the Delhi Metro.
#GoAnywhereAnytime, #MaiBhiMastMauli and #Chalein: Social media campaigns encouraging women to claim the city fearlessly.
Physical Campaign
The physical leg of the campaign will extend this celebration to the city with 'Claim the City.' interventions such as:
Murals by Women Artists
Aligning this campaign with ongoing International Women's Day activities by DMRC, the City of Women team curated a mural on the theme 'Delhi-NCR as a City of Women' for the Dwarka Sec- 14]Metro Station. The powerful mural on women empowerment has been conceptualized and designed by the women-led team at Nori Narrative along with Swati Kharbanda and executed by an all-women team of 12 talented muralists from across the country. It shows women of different age groups and backgrounds confidently claiming public spaces throughout the city.
The mural was inaugurated on March 6 by Vikas Kumar, Managing Director, DMRC, and Dr Shalini Singh, with the team of muralists and representatives from Vedica and the Nori Narrative.
The Dwarka Sec-14 metro station is a canvas of hope, resilience, and empowerment today. The project intends to change the narrative around women’s freedom and safety in Delhi. It aims to build a tribe of fearless independent women who claim the city and inspire others to do so.
