Trust Fall: How Shubhangi is Experimenting with Career Choices

“In life, I’ve taken huge leaps of faith and called it research later.” So says Shubhangi. You can see it in the choices she’s made: A biology student with a dream of becoming a doctor, Shubhangi ended up pursuing a degree in fashion and lifestyle accessory design. Only to realise that she is more interested in the story behind a product than designing the product itself.

Shubhangi then pivoted to content writing and eventually wound up at Vedica, very sure that an interdisciplinary approach will help her contextualise the khichdi of choices she’s made. “I asked a lot of questions. And I made peace with the fact that you cannot learn everything, especially about subjects you’ve never been exposed to. Instead, I focused on building perspectives. And I always asked for help from my friends whenever I struggled.”

For Shubhangi, seeking help became a way of finding empowerment. “Women at Vedica are so strong. They always show up, not only as the person they are, but the person they want to become.”

Over time, as Shubhangi unpacked the layers of gender biases through different liberal arts courses, she began realising how much we take women for granted. This has made her more appreciative of the freedom she has to explore choices even with the risk of failure. “My mom wore her strength as her armour so that I can wear it as my skin.”

In 18 months, Shubhangi has learnt to experiment with skillsets that are never thought to go together. She approaches creativity with strategic frameworks and uses critical thinking to simplify her own life.

Most of all, Shubhangi has learnt the art of articulating her story. Starting her career as a Management Trainee at Aditya Birla Capital, she is able to chart her diverse career paths like well-planned metro routes: connecting distant and different parts of a city.

For any girl afraid to tread the road not taken, Shubhangi’s story is an inspiration. Perhaps faith in our own capabilities can help us take the trust fall, and dare to walk the path of an unconventionally holistic leader.
